Velma Starkey, 83, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 17, 2024 surrounded by family.
Velma was one of 4 daughters born to Sotela and Enrique Rodriguez at home on May 15, 1941 in Ozona, Texas. She and her family later moved to California and she lived in Fontana the last 42 years of her life.
She is survived by her two younger sisters Connie Tedder and Tillie (Jim) Sherman. Along with her son Anthony (Lourie) Fernandez, daughter Becki (Joe) Davis, grandchildren Sidney, Mailani, Nicki, Kristen and her great granddaughters Brielle and Everly. Along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Dennis Starkey, along with her oldest sister Adela Atenza.
Velma was a beautiful and simple woman who loved people, she could talk to anyone, even “the wall” as she would sometimes joke. She often enjoyed telling stories of her childhood or her fond memories with her sisters. She best enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends.
She was a very active member of AMVETS, volunteering her time and crafting special items for the veterans at local hospitals, as well as assisting with many fundraisers.
When she was able, she enjoyed waking up early to go shop the swap meet, staying at home busy with family tree research, sewing projects, word searches and puzzles.
Although Velma was not a very religious woman, she had faith that God would one day remember her and reunite her with her family. Until that time, she would want us to reflect on the happy memories we shared together.
On behalf of our family, thank you so much for all of the love, prayers and support you have shown during this difficult time.
